Should you be looking forward to your first job?
OR
Your first contract.
Perhaps you have examined this information and concluded that independent practice is limited to the nurse with vast experience and/or a much sought after specialty. NOT SO.
As a new grad, you will have special needs such as a supportive environment with appropriate mentoring. Many of our RNs operate as "one-person registries" working in different facilities on a PRN basis while others sign thirteen or twenty-six week contracts. Some negotiate different periods of time. We do encourage our members to NOT obligate themselves for long-term commitments. In most cases this is simply not good business.
However, as a new grad seeking to build clinical experience, your best interests will be served by seeking a one-year commitment in the proper facility. There may be exceptions such as a shorter obligation in long-term-care or a longer contract if you elect to go directly into a specialty area such as OB, ER, or ICU. Regardless, your first contract should allow you to gain the experience to make yourself marketable as an independent nurse.
New grads have traditionally begun their careers at a salary substantially lower than experienced nurses. As an independent new grad you will have to charge a rate lower that your colleagues with more background, BUT, with knowledgeable assistance in negotiating your first contract, you will enjoy earnings substantially higher than you would as an employee.
WHERE DO I GET THIS ASSISTANCE??
One of the spin-off ideas associated with independent nursing is that of a Nurse Agent. This is a person or business entity that negotiates and secures contracts for independent nurses. Unlike a traditional registry or agency, their involvement stops with the signing of the contract. They typically work on a commission basis receiving payment only if they are successful in obtaining a contract that is mutually agreeable between you and the facility.
To our knowledge there are currently no Nurse Agents that work with new grads. We are sure that this will change as the concept gains acceptance.
Because of this lack, and because we believe that independent nursing will spread more rapidly if we involve our newest members to the profession, We will act as Nurse Agents for New Grads.
